Hansel Character Model

Hansel Character Model

First character I finished for the short film personal project I am working on in my free time. The short film will be my interpretation of the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.

Modelling of Hansel was done with Blender, my weapon of choice for character modelling.

Texturing was done in Zbrush, I tried Blender but switched over as the painting features in Blender didn’t seem good enough, I will give Blender texturing a second try soon, as I might have been the problem.

Rendered in Blender Cycles. Because of the interactive nature of Cycles, shading was set up in a flash with very good results.

Hair was very problematic as Cycles doesn’t have any hair curve rendering support. After trying everything to convert the curves into geometry without success because of the high number of strands, I rendered the hair in Blender Internal and composited it together. I am not entirely happy with the hair results.

This is not the final version as some things will change as soon as the required Cycles features become available. You can find the Blender Cycles roadmap here http://code.blender.org/index.php/2012/01/cycles-roadmap/ . The features I am eagerly waiting for is hair and subsurface scattering(SSS). I will carry on with the rest of the characters in the mean time.

Be a part of Hansel and Gretel

I am looking for a writer to join the project.

Other artists that is needed is:

  1. Concept Artists
  2. Storyboard Artists
  3. Character Artists
  4. Environment Artists
  5. Animators
  6. Lighting Artists
  7. Sound Artists
  8. Voice Over Artists

This project is a personal project and people should only join for the love of creating it, credits and a solid piece to have in your portfolio. I can’t offer any financial compensation at the moment but if the animated short generates revenue in some way (which I doubt) we can split the profits.

You can check the progress of this project on my blog at http://www.theemptyroom.co.uk/hansel-and-gretel .

Please let me know what you guys think.

Excellent work! I can’t wait to see the other characters.

  2. Hi!

I saw your model as a post on Blender Nation and loved it right away! I’m really excited to start following your project as it sounds fantastic!

I noticed you’re looking for some help on the project. Unfortunately,my CGI work isn’t nearly good enough yet for this sort of thing. BUT, I saw you’re looking for a writer and I would love to be considered for the job. Obviously, no expectation of compensation. I have tons of samples of my writing that I can send your way so you can see if my writing style is up to your standards.

Also, I have a lot of connections in the film world, so if you need any help with voice actors, I know plenty of people who’d be interested in helping out on that end too.

Shoot me an e-mail at kristopher.wile@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Thats great Kristopher. You can email the samples of work you have done to dewald@theemptyroom.co.uk.

We can start working on it by next month as I am very busy at the moment. Just mail your samples through and I will let you know.

I would like to help by modeling assets for you. I’m not the most experienced, but I think I could help. I also might be able to make some music for it. Shoot me an email.

That is excellent. I am planning to create some tutorials for my blog as well, that might help.

I will definitely keep you in the loop.

    Hi Dewald,

I am interested in the project you are doing. Though my interest is slightly from a different angle. I have a very similar personal project also based on a classical literature.
I would like to propose some sort of collaboration. If you are interested, please, let me know your email address.

      I like the variety of
